We're the Only Ones Confused Enough

Confused police abandoned their search for a car wreck, leaving a 66-year-old epileptic to die outside his vehicle in freezing temperatures while his autistic grandson huddled inside.

Yeah, it sounds like "some sort of weird joke," doesn't it? Or am I the "Only One" who thinks so?
