From ABC (Radio Australia):

Sri Lanka's military has admitted to its biggest battlefield losses in six months in fierce fighting with Tamil rebels in the north of the country.

Officials say more than 30 soldiers were killed and dozens injured in an effort to capture the Tamil Tigers' political capital, Kilinochchi.

At least 11 rebels are said to have also died in the fighting.

There was no immediate comment from the Tigers.

But a pro-rebel website says the Tigers lured government troops into an area they held, and then launched mortar attacks and inflicted heavy losses.

Tens of thousands have died on both sides since the Tamil Tigers launched a campaign for an independent state in 1972.
