Maoist Insurgents Ambush Indian Commandos -- New York Times

NEW DELHI — More than 200 Maoist rebels lurking in a remote part of western India’s Maharashtra State ambushed 45 police commandos on Thursday, killed 17 of them and ran off with their weapons, officials announced. The ambush was one of the bloodiest attacks by the Maoists at a time when India’s central government is preparing for a major paramilitary offensive against them.

The ambush came two days after the rebels beheaded an officer in a different region and served as another reminder of their increasingly brazen tactics.
