NATO Leader: Alliance To Focus On Territorial Defense -- Defense News

BRUSSELS - NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen described the alliance's core function as "territorial defense of its populations and member states," and also anticipated closer cooperation with Russia while speaking here just days before the bloc's upcoming summit in Lisbon.

Although stating that NATO has "no ambition to become the world's policeman," he did not rule out the alliance operating beyond its borders to protect its citizens, as has happened in Afghanistan.
