Tunisian Police Clash With Protesters As Unrest Spreads -- The Guardian

Fighting breaks out on streets of capital Tunis despite climbdown by president following US criticism.

Police and protesters clashed in the centre of Tunis as unrest reached the Tunisian capital for the first time, even as President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali extended an olive branch to demonstrators.

Police fired teargas at hundreds of protesters at a main intersection, driving them to disperse into adjoining streets. Two army vehicles were posted at the intersection by the French embassy.
