Colonel Gaddafi's sprawling compound came under a hail of fire today as rebels were joined by Nato jets in a 'big push' and appeared to have broken into the leader's hiding place.
The furious rebels spurred on by heavy causalities and the brazen appearance of his favourite son Saif al-Islam several hours earlier fired mortars at the presidential palace's concrete walls.
