Fears Afghanistan Is On Verge Of New Sectarian War As 59 People Killed In Twin Bomb Attacks -- The Telegraph

Fears that Afghanistan is on the verge of a new sectarian campaign of violence have been raised after nearly 60 people were killed in twin bomb attacks on Shia Muslims celebrating a holy day.

In the worst attack at least 54 were killed when a lone suicide bomber detonated among a throng of worshippers marking Ashura outside a riverside shrine in the Afghan capital.

President Hamid Karzai called the attacks unprecedented and Shia clerics and leaders appealed to their followers for calm as young men held angry rallies near the blast site.
