Iran’s simmering confrontation with the UN Security Council and the IAEA over its nuclear program has left statesmen in the West squirming in vain for a reasonable solution. Few in the West have an appetite for war. Many Western statesmen reject tighter economic sanctions on Iran since they believe such sanctions would only punish innocent Iranians who are already struggling with a broken economy. Similarly, they believe sanctions on Iran’s oil industry are a form of unsustainable self-punishment. (Need I mention the lobbying of Western industrialists who export to Iran?)
Having thus rejected courses of action that would actually create leverage over the Iranian regime, feckless Western statesmen are left with blind hope. Hope that some “moderates” might be found in Tehran with whom the West can do business. Hope that these (hypothetical) Iranian moderates might be able to change the regime’s policies. Or hope that some sort of revolution, led by either a frustrated middle class or idealistic students, will install a reasonable government in Tehran.
