UNMANNED CIA drones pounded targets with missiles in Pakistan yesterday, in an escalation of US attacks.
US officials said an al-Qa'ida figure close to Osama bin Laden - identified as Abdullah Azam al-Saudi, an Arab working as a link with Taliban leaders - was killed in a compound close to the town of Bannu in the North-West Frontier Province.
The attack came after weeks of protests by Pakistan over the US strikes, and as the country's most powerful man, army chief General Ashfaq Kayani, was "pounding the table" at NATO headquarters in Brussels, arguing the strikes were counter-productive in the battle against al-Qa'ida and the Taliban.
