From CNN:
(CNN) -- Retreating government forces in the Democratic Republic of Congo are fighting local militiamen deep in rebel-held territory, witnesses said Tuesday.
According to The Associated Press, the Mai Mai militiamen are normally pro-government but they appear to be taking advantage of the army's retreat to steal the soldiers' weapons.
The soldiers are fleeing -- along with thousands of civilians -- from a steady rebel advance.
The clashes took place early Tuesday in the towns and villages around Kanyabayonga, about 130 kilometers (80 miles) north of the regional capital, Goma, AP said.
