A hostess aboard a luxury yacht, the French head of state and a former kick-boxing champion are among the multiple plaintiffs in a storm of litigation raging over a spy chief’s notes about the peccadilloes of the political elite.
France has long been accustomed to murky goings-on in its government but the jottings of Yves Bertrand, former head of domestic intelligence, about the sexual predilections of celebrities and politicians have prompted indignation, embarrassment and intense debate about the extent to which the French are spied on in daily life.
“Is it really essential for the republic to know who is sleeping with whom?” asked Jean-Marie Rouart, the writer.
