Reporting from Jakarta, Indonesia -- Thailand's army chief called today for Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat to step down and hold new elections, a key demand of protesters who seized the country's main airport.
Insisting his request did not amount to a coup, General Anupong Paochinda told a news conference that protesters who have occupied the country's main airport, stranding some 3,000 travelers, should leave the building.
"The government still has full authority," the general told reporters after meeting with officials from the military and police along with academics and business leaders. "If a coup could end all the troubles, I would do it," he added.

My Comment: Losing the confidence of the Army in Thailand is the last step before being put out of power. This is now a coup in every sense of the word.
