Agreements reached in January between the government and Congolese armed groups - most notably Laurent Nkunda's National Congress for the Defense of the People (CNDP) - on a cease-fire and on commitments to pursue peace in the region, fell apart in late August. These last few weeks have seen a succession of fighting, cease-fires, advances and retreats, with the only constant being the ongoing suffering of the Congolese people.

Recently, the Security Council approved the mission's request for an additional 3,000 troops. This is a positive step but it is now crucial that our troop-contributing countries respond quickly to our request to get these desperately needed assets on the ground as soon as possible. As this will take several months, some countries are considering deploying a multinational force as a bridging measure. This would be most welcome.
