Hamas Fighters Display Mix of Swagger And Fear

GAZA CITY — The fighter was wearing slippers, had not showered for days and had been living on dried dates. But he was in a good mood because Tuesday was payday.

As beleaguered as Hamas’s military wing might seem after more than 900 Palestinian deaths and 18 days of fighting, he and two other young men here say it is not broken.

In separate interviews on Tuesday, the three men who identified themselves as fighters described how life had slowed but not stopped. They collected wages in American dollars. (Israeli shekels are in short supply in Gaza now, and dollars appear to have been smuggled in from outside.) They walked freely to visit the wounded in hospitals and they talked about how Hamas was adapting, changing to more cautious tactics they say are leading to fewer casualties.
