China is ready to negotiate a peace deal with Taiwan and end decades of hostility, said Wen Jiabao, the Chinese prime minister.
In his speech to the opening of the Chinese parliament, the National People's Congress, Mr Wen said China was now "ready to creat conditions for ending the state of hostility" with its neighbour.
China has claimed sovereignty over Taiwan since 1949, and has often threatened to reclaim the island by force, if necessary.
However, relations between the mainland and Taiwan have blossomed in recent years, especially since Ma Ying-jeou took over the Taiwanese presidency last May and vowed to take a pro-China stance.
