Congress Aims To Police Border Violence

From Wall Street Journal:

WASHINGTON -- The number of federal agents trying to keep drugs and illegal immigrants out of the U.S. has more than doubled in five years. Congress now wants those sentinels to keep watch in both directions -- to stop the smuggling of U.S. guns and cash to Mexico.

Both Democratic and Republican lawmakers on Tuesday urged officials from the Department of Homeland Security to halt the flow of weapons and drug profits that has fueled the violence by Mexico's drug gangs.

My Comment: Very little if any discussion from Washington on enforcing immigration laws and deporting illegal immigrants. The talk is all about intercepting weapons going to the south, and interdicting money transfers.

Sigh ..... Washington is in conflict with their desire to open the borders, but are now being pressured by their own citizens who live on the borders of this war. The Hispanic lobby wants open borders and a easing of immigration rules .... but others do not. There are many who want to legalize drugs ... there are others who want greater enforcement.

These competing agendas will result in the following ...

As the war in Mexico gets worse .... and it will .... the trend in the U.S. Government will be to enforce the immigration laws on the books, and to assist the Mexican Government directly in their conflict. I give it a 50-50 chance that U.S. DEA Agents and special law enforcement will be in Mexico to assist the Mexicans in fighting this war (in the next 4 years). I will also predict that this could be President Obama's biggest problem (outside of the U.S.) come election time in 2012.
