ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Zahid Khan, a secular politician from a militant stronghold, knows that a peace deal with pro-Taliban insurgents in Swat Valley could make them stronger.
But Khan, who helped negotiate the fragile peace deal that brought a loose form of Islamic law to the northwestern region last week, said his political party, the Awami National Party, had little choice.
