Sri Lankan forces say that they have surrounded several of the last surviving Tamil Tiger rebels and injured the son of the elusive rebel leader in fierce fighting yesterday.

The Sri Lankan Army said that it had surrounded dozens of rebels in a tiny patch of jungle – 200 metres by 300 metres – on Wednesday and is hunting them down, according to a military spokesman.

Commanding the Tigers as they defend a small sliver of land in the northeast of the country is thought to be their leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran, with his son, Charles Anthony, who is reported to have been wounded in fighting on Wednesday.
