The White House turns its focus to cyberspace on Friday, with President Obama announcing a new plan to protect the country’s electronic networks from attacks launched both at home and abroad — and to hold at risk any adversaries.
The Times’s David Sanger and Thom Shanker report that a new White House office will defend the computer systems that control, among other things, American stock exchanges and air traffic control systems. Meanwhile, the Pentagon is moving forward with a more offensive military complement to the White House plan, a plan that recognizes that the “United States already has a growing number of computer weapons in its arsenal, and must prepare strategies for their use – as a deterrent or alongside conventional weapons — in a wide variety of possible future conflicts.”
