British Troops Killed After Commanders Forced Into Panther's Claw Numbers Game -- Times Online

A tactical decision to pull a British unit out of Sangin in northern Helmand province led to a surge in Taleban attacks in the area in which 14 British soldiers were killed in five weeks.

The withdrawal of some of the troops based in Sangin was ordered because of the need to find enough soldiers to take part in Operation Panther’s Claw, the five-week offensive in central Helmand, the first phase of which ended on July 25.

Three British battle groups consisting of 3,000 soldiers were engaged in the operation to drive the Taleban out of the heavily populated areas in central Helmand, between Lashkar Gah, Babaji and Gereschk.
