It is 60 years since the Geneva Conventions on the rules of war were agreed.

They arose from a wish to protect civilians and stop the worst abuses by fighters.

They were given extra urgency in the wake of the horrors of World War II.

But how much have the Geneva Conventions achieved over the last 60 years?

And how appropriate are they now, given the changing nature of warfare?

The BBC's Imogen Foulkes travelled with the International Committee of the Red Cross to Georgia and to South Ossetia to find out.
