China Acts As Xinjiang Tensions Rise

URUMQI, China -- China's government is struggling to combat smoldering ethnic tensions and regain public confidence in this northwestern city, after renewed unrest last week showed the intransigence of a problem that could fuel instability in the strategically important area for years to come.

With pressure on to keep the peace as China prepares to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Communist Party rule on Oct. 1, Beijing has taken extraordinary steps to assuage public anger. Over the weekend, it sacked the city's top party official as well as the police chief of the Xinjiang region.
