Did Five Torontonians Join Jihad In Somalia?

Abdul Warsame, a youth leader in the Somali community, says there is a crisis of "belonging" that plagues all young people from war-torn countries, especially if they still have relatives there. (Dec. 10, 2009). RICHARD LAUTENS/TORONTO STAR

From The Toronto Star:

They hung out at a Somali restaurant in "Little Mogadishu" in the northwest corner of the city, played basketball together, and worshipped at a North York mosque.

The five friends, in their early to mid-20s, grew up and attended schools in Toronto. They spoke English and Somali. At least two of them were university students.

My Comment: Canada is a country that is made up of immigrants .... I should know .... I live in Canada. I am also not impressed by the argument that the children of immigrants have a crisis of "belonging" to the community .... hence the reason why some of them have made the decision to join jihad in places like Somalia.

I was born in Canada from parents who immigrated from Eastern Europe .... and while I did have a tough time in adjusting to life in Canada, I would never think of leaving this country to go to another country that is wracked by war and internal conflict. Why should I .... my loyalty is to Canada and not to Russia or anywhere else.

The central issue on why these young men decided to go abroad and fight for Jihad is religion .... more specifically .... the radical tenets that promote violence and conflict against those that this brand of radical Islam is at war with.

The focus should be on the mosque that these men went to, and to find out who was the person and/or persons who radicalized these youths to go abroad and wage war. Until this is done .... only more men will then be radicalized by this hate to go abroad and wage war against people that their own parents lost contact with a long time ago.
