The Best Defense Against Cyber Insurgents Is A Good Offense

From USNI:

Danger Room is doing an outstanding job covering the story regarding insurgents capturing data from drones by eavesdropping the airwaves first revealed by the Wall Street Journal. Additional stories have covered other systems potentially vulnerable, potential ramifications of insurgent data interception, and my personal favorite – a discussion with Rex Buddenberg of the Naval Postgraduate School regarding the broader problem where the DoD focuses primarily on link security (communication protection) as opposed to data security (information protection).

My Comment: I am still somewhat ambivalent on what did these Iraqi insurgents gain by intercepting the video feeds from our UAVs. What they would see are a bunch of buildings and the path that the UAV is taking .... the intent and mission objective will still be a mystery to them. In addition, many of these UAVs are not silent .... the insurgents would have picked up on them long before they have reached their target .... intercepting a video feed or not.

Still .... it is uncomfortable to know that insurgents may be listening in and/or watching our operations unfold. While I am sure that this vulnerability in our UAV platform will be solved soon, what bothers me is that this vulnerability has been known for a very long time, and it is only now that it is being addressed.
