Iraq's Secret Prisons And Torture Chambers Are Making A Comeback

Detainees Tortured By Iraqi Government In 'Secret' Prison -- The Telegraph

Hundreds of detainees rounded up in a security sweep by the Iraqi government were tortured and sexually humiliated, according to a report which threatens new harm to the reputation of the prime minister.

The men, from the north of the country and mostly Sunnis, were accused of being terrorists sympathetic to either al-Qaeda or the Ba'athist regime of former leader Saddam Hussein.

According to the report by Human Rights Watch, which interviewed 42 of 431 detainees who were being held at a secret prison when it was shut down this month, inmates were hung upside down by their feet and beaten until they passed out.
