
Gathering Storm May Sink Navy Shipbuilding Program -- National Defense
Navy Secretary Ray Mabus has a message for the shipbuilding industry: We will stick with our plan to build 10 ships a year, and we will not change ship designs mid-way through programs. In return, you have to invest in shipyard infrastructure, train the work force and lower the cost of ships.
The plan sounds simple enough, but it may not be enough for the Navy to reach its goal of a 320-ship fleet by 2020, compared to 286 ships today.
Mabus so far is in an optimistic mood. “We’re on the right trajectory,” he says during a meeting with reporters this week.
