Jailbreak Precedes Afghan Conference -- New York Times

KABUL, Afghanistan — Insurgents used a prison break, suicide bomb and improvised explosive devices Sunday to make their presence felt just two days before a landmark international conference here that will bring dozens of foreign ministers to the country including the United Nations secretary general and Hillary Rodham Clinton, the American secretary of State.

In Farah province in western Afghanistan, a complex series of attacks inside and outside the provincial prison allowed the escape of at least 20 Taliban prisoners and killed a policeman. At midday local police and other security forces were still searching for the escapees, according to Afghan security officials.
