Al-Qaeda Attempts To Reassert Itself In Iraq -- The Telegraph
Al-Qaeda is trying to reassert itself in Iraq by offering state funded Sunni militiamen more money than they get from the government in an attempt to get them to switch sides.
The Sons of Iraq fighters, who are paid about $300 (£180) a month by the government, have played a key role in the reduction of violence in Iraq since late 2006, when they joined the US military and Iraqi security forces in the fight against the terror group.
Recruited from among Sunni Arab tribesmen and former insurgents the roughly 100,000 strong group, also known as Sahwa, or the Awakening Council movement, are widely credited with turning the tide against al-Qaeda in Iraq, along with the surge of tens of thousands of US troops.
