UN: Thousands More Troops Needed to Contain Somali Violence -- Voice of AmericaThe U.N.'s top envoy for Somalia warned Thursday that more international peacekeepers are needed there because of the growing threat from insurgent groups. Augustine Mahiga told the U.N. Security Council that the 6,000-strong African Union Mission in Somalia - known as AMISOM - needs as many as 20,000 troops in the coming months to support the fragile Transitional Federal Government.
Augustine Mahiga told the Security Council that he is concerned by the deteriorating security situation in Somalia and its potential impact on the entire region. He said foreign fighters and weapons are entering the Horn-of-Africa country through the southern port city of Kismayo.
