This Day in History: December 16

The newly-acquired Patriot privateer Sally, led by Capt. Benjamin Stone, had a short engagement with a large British transport ship. After having several men killed and wounded and no wind to maneuver his ship the captain had his men row the ship to a safe distance from the enemy before returning to Charleston. Capt. Francis Johnson and five other sailors were killed by enemy musket fire. Twelve men were wounded. [More]
