Southern Sudan's Independence Vote Nears End As North Expects Secession -- Bloomberg

Southern Sudan’s weeklong referendum on independence entered its final day, as a top official of President Umar al-Bashir’s ruling party said he expected the oil-rich region to secede and form Africa’s newest nation.

More than 2,600 voting centers were scheduled to close today. Officials from the commission that organized the referendum said turnout had passed the 60 percent needed for a valid result, due to be announced next month and independence declared in July.
