Vote In South Sudan Indicates A Mass Majority Support For Independence

Southern Sudan’s Capital Voted 97.5% for Independence -- Bloomberg Businessweek

Jan. 19 (Bloomberg) -- About 97.5 percent of the voters in Southern Sudan’s capital voted for independence for the oil-rich region, the chairman of Juba county’s referendum sub-committee said.

About 1.6 percent voted to remain part of Africa’s biggest country by area in the weeklong referendum that ended on Jan. 15, Timon Wani said today by telephone from Juba. Two of the region’s 10 states also reported overwhelming support for independence.
