The Pakistani Foreign Office yesterday condemned U.S. news reports that the South Asian state was rapidly expanding its nuclear arms stockpile, the Press Trust of India reported (see GSN, Feb. 1).
The Washington Post and the New York Times published articles this week regarding the apparent growth in the Pakistani nuclear arsenal. Obama administration officials and independent experts said Islamabad is believed to hold a minimum of 90 deployed nuclear weapons and possibly more than 110. Projections would put Pakistan's stockpile ahead of India's and on track to rise above the United Kingdom, which is the world's No. 5 nuclear arms possessor.
