Security forces opened fire on pro-democracy protestors in Bahrain today with tear gas and heavy weapons, wounding at least 50 as thousands defied a ban on demonstrations to demand change in the tiny Gulf kingdom.

Just 24 hours after Britain and the United States had led international calls for restraint following the deaths of four protestors, police and troops again fired on demonstrators streaming into the centre of the capital Manama.
