Military Reserves Seize New Role -- Politico

When Lt. Col. Bill Korsen enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1986, the nation’s Reserve forces were a pool of strategic manpower — a place where troops drilled once a month, went to summer camp for two weeks a year and wondered whether they’d ever be called up.

It’s a lot different now. Reserve call-ups for the 1990-91 Gulf War broke a hole in the wall that once separated the Reserves from the active military. Then the Sept. 11 attacks tore it down.
