Defense Budget Will Be ‘Crucified’ If Supercommittee Does Not Recommend Raising Revenue, Says Rep. Adam Smith -- Washington Post
Speaking to an audience at the American Enterprise Institute Thursday, Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA), ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee, said that if the supercommittee does not recommend raising revenues, the defense budget will be “crucified.”
The congressional supercommittee is tasked with shrinking the deficit by more than a trillion dollars, but Republicans have vowed to defeat any proposal that raises taxes. The Pentagon’s budget ($671 billion was proposed for 2012) has been at the center of attention over where to make budget cuts.
“If we don’t make the case for how to fix that, defense is going to be crucified,” said Smith.
