The Sullivans were supposed to be a big Irish Catholic family.

Today they set four plates at the table for the holidays: for Kelly Sullivan, and for her brother, father and grandmother.

Kelly Sullivan’s grandfather, Al Sullivan, was the youngest of the five Sullivan brothers from Waterloo. They joined the Navy to avenge the death of a friend after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, an attack that pushed the United States into World War II.

The five brothers served and died together on the USS Juneau, which was sunk by a torpedo in 1942. Only Al Sullivan, 20, was a father.
