Pentagon Tries to Counter Cheap, Potent Weapons -- New York Times

WASHINGTON — President Obama’s new military strategy has focused fresh attention on an increasingly important threat: the use of inexpensive weapons like mines and cyberattacks that aim not to defeat the American military in battle but to keep it at a distance.

The president and his national security team predict that the security challenges of the coming decade will be defined by this threat, just as the last one was defined by terrorism and insurgency.

My Comment: Asymmetrical warfare, where your opponent hopes to win through attrition and patience .... has always been America's weakness .... further amplified by our departure from Iraq and our impending departure from Afghanistan. We may have the billion dollar weapons platforms, but on the ground the insurgents and militants believe that they are winning using small but potent fertilizer bombs and suicide attacks.
