Bomber Command lost 55,000 crew during the Second World War, but it is only now that the sacrifice is being registered

Back at the start of the swinging Sixties, the Beyond the Fringe team raised much laughter with a sketch entitled "Aftermyth of War". It mocked some cherished wartime legends, and among its targets were the men who bombed Germany. The sequence opens with Peter Cook, in the uniform of a senior RAF officer, breaking up a party of airmen having a sing-song around a piano. He informs one of them by the name of Perkins that he is needed for a ''futile gesture'' to raise flagging morale. He is to ''get up in a crate, pop over to Bremen… don't come back.''

''Goodbye, sir,'' says Perkins gamely as he departs to do his duty. ''Or is it au revoir?'' The reply comes: ''No, Perkins.'' The line invariably produced a gale of sophisticated mirth.

My Comment: Honoring those who served 67 years after the fact. Better late than never.
