By the end of September, 23,000 U.S. troops are scheduled to withdraw from Afghanistan, and U.S. officials have said they hope to transition remaining troops to an advisory role by mid- to late 2013. U.S. troops could still be involved in combat operations, with Afghan forces, after the switch.
