Syria Reveals Chemical Weapons -- The Australian

THE Syrian regime, fighting a 16-month uprising that has claimed more than 19,000 lives, last night acknowledged for the first time that it has stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons.

It said, however, that it would use them only in a foreign attack and never against its own citizens, despite claims last week by the country's most senior defector that chemical weapons may have already been used by President Bashar al-Assad.

Syria, believed to have one of the largest stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons in the Middle East, has not signed the 1992 Chemical Weapons Convention outlawing their production, stockpiling and use.
