Marines in Afghanistan should expect more attacks like the two last week in which six troops were shot and killed by Afghans thought to be allies, the Marine Corps’ top general warns in a letter distributed Tuesday to leaders across the service.
But in addressing potential security gaps, deployed forces must walk a fine line between reducing risk and “driving a wedge into the relationship we have painstakingly built with our Afghan partners,” writes Gen. Jim Amos, the Marine Corps’ commandant. A copy of his letter, directed to all generals, commanding officers and small-unit leaders, was provided to Marine Corps Times on Wednesday.
