Cheick Modibo Diarra calls for military help to defeat Islamist rebels, who control vast swathes of territory in north. Mali's prime minister has called for the UN Security Council to approve international military intervention in his country to defeat rebels who control vast swathes of territory in the north. Cheick Modibo Diarra's call on Wednesday came as Francois Hollande, the French president, called for the council to approve African military intervention in Mali "as quickly as possible". "The government of Mali would like to see the immediate presence of this force to support the defence and security in carrying out their noble mission of recovering and maintaining territorial integrity and protecting persons and property," Diarra said.
