Mahinda Rajapaksa, Sri Lanka's president, is expected to try to defuse -rising concern in India over his government's military campaign against ethnic Tamil rebels while he is in New Delhi this week for a regional summit.
India's leftist parties have joined in a clamour for New Delhi to intervene in the civil war in Sri Lanka to force a political settlement. Regional parties supporting the Congress-led national coalition have made threats to bring down the government over the conflict because of close ethnic ties between southern Tamil Nadu state and Sri Lanka's Tamil minority.
