Sri Lankan Military 'Breaks' Tamil Tiger's Defence

The Sri Lankan military has claimed to have seized the first of three lines of defence of the Tamil Tiger rebels on the northern Jaffna Peninsula following weeks of intense fighting.

A military spokesman in the capital Colombo said 50 rebels and around 10 soldiers died in the fighting in which the army, backed by artillery and mortar fire had captured a five-mile long embankment strewn with fortified rebel bunkers.

"They (the rebels) had a lot of casualties and we are now advancing towards their second line of defence" military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said.

My Comment: With each passing week, the perception is that the Sri Lanka Army is slowly encircling and cutting off LTTE soldiers.
