JERUSALEM: Efforts to end the three-week-old Gaza war made progress Friday with Washington pledging to help stop arms smuggling to Hamas and Israeli officials returning from a second trip to Cairo after cease-fire talks. An Israeli government spokesman said, "I think we are heading to the endgame."
But portions of the Arab and Muslim worlds took a harder line. At a meeting organized by Qatar, a top exiled leader of Hamas rejected Israeli terms for a cease-fire and called for increased resistance.
