Mexico poses the second greatest threat to U.S. security after al Qaeda.

President Obama faces many foreign problems, from a resurgent Russia to the threat of nuclear weapons held by Iran and North Korea. But Michael Hayden, the departing CIA director, says that Mexico poses the second greatest threat to U.S. security after al Qaeda.

Mexico now features a virtual civil war between the government and powerful drug cartels armed with the most sophisticated weaponry. A total of 218 Americans have been killed since 2004 in the country, at least half of them innocent victims going about legitimate business or tourism.

The U.S. Consulate in Juarez, across from El Paso, has been warning Americans to stay away and the local government is now deploying a security force to create safe commuter routes for U.S. executives traveling to their work in industrial parks. A total of 153 people were killed in Juarez last month alone, and kidnappings and daylight robberies are routine. Only about 20% of all murders in Mexico ever see the arrest of any suspect.

My Comment: The key quote from the outgoing CIA Director:

The Mexican cartel war is the second greatest threat to U.S. security after al Qaeda.

When the CIA Director says that .... you have to listen. Will the new Director of the CIA have the same thinking .... or for that matter the President of the United States .... I guess we have to wait and see.
