U.S. Drone Strikes May Be Cementing Pakistani Militancy

From International Herald Tribune:

WASHINGTON: In the mountains of northwest Pakistan, the psychological impact of America's drone strikes can be measured by this: Some residents have given up drinking Lipton tea, out of a growing conviction that the C.I.A. is using the tea bags as homing beacons for its pilotless planes.

But in Pakistan's cities there is a different impact: a sense that the gizmos, created to instill fear in America's enemies, only reveal the fears of Americans to take casualties themselves. There, a song of protest taunts the world's most powerful country for sending robots to do a man's job.

My Comment: War always brings out the worse in people. I am sure that the Predator/Reaper strikes in the Pakistan tribal areas is bringing out the worse in people .... but the same people who protest these attacks are also the same people (by an overwhelming majority) who support the Taliban and Al Qaeda elements that plan and implement attacks against us. They are not our friends or allies .... they are the enemy.

I will never forget the images that were beamed back to us from the Pakistan and Afghan tribal areas right after 9/11. I knew in my gut that their joy would soon be replaced by war and suffering. That the American war machine would be paying them a visit far more sooner than what they thought was possible. A quick response that probably even surprised Osama Bin laden.

The Predator and Reaper drones are the byproduct of 9/11, and their attacks are very effective tools of warfare. They represent a future in which all the old rules will no longer apply. The militancy in Pakistan has always be a tight group .... but if they were so confident in their tactics .... why are they protesting for the Americans to stop?

No .... they are protesting because for the first time in their history they are fighting an enemy that they know cannot be defeated using the old rules of warfare..
