America would arm its allies and extend its “defence umbrella” across the Middle East if Iran succeeded in producing nuclear weapons, the US Secretary of State said today.
Hillary Clinton's statement at the ASEAN meeting of foreign ministers in Thailand swiftly provoked an anxious reaction from Israel. Israel’s minister for intelligence and atomic energy, Dan Meridor, bristled at the implication that Iran’s nuclear status might be regarded as a strategic reality.
“I was not thrilled to hear the American statement that they will protect their allies with a nuclear umbrella, as if they have already come to terms with a nuclear Iran,” he told Israeli army radio. “I think that's a mistake.”

My Comment: Arm them with what?
If Iran has nuclear weapons, the only way that you can counter such a position is with nuclear weapons of your own.
I doubt that the Americans are going to give nuclear weapons to Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Kuwait, Egypt, and even Israel, But does this mean that if Iran has a nuclear stockpile, will the U.S. put its allies under an American nuclear umbrella .... not an American Defense umbrella. Or is this one and the same.
Also (more importantly) .... is Secretary of State Clinton now hinting that the U.S. is about to accept a nuclear Iran by making this defense commitment to its allies in the region. If true .... what happened to President Obama's pledge that he would not accept a nuclear Iran.
If I was in the Iranian Government, I would be embolden by her remarks because it is the first time that a senior U.S. Government official has accepted the premise of a nuclear Iran. If her remarks are not repudiated by the White House in the next day or two ..... I would have to say yes to the question that the U.S. is now prepared to position itself in the event of a nuclear Iran.
