Brazil VP Says Country Should Build Nuclear Arms -- Yahoo News/APBRASILIA, Brazil – Brazil's vice president says in an interview published Friday that his country should develop nuclear weapons. Other officials stressed that his comments were not government policy.
Jose Alencar, who also served as defense minister from 2004 to 2006, said in an interview with journalists from several Brazilian news media that his country does not have a program to develop nuclear weapons, but should: "We have to advance on that."

My Comment: Brazil is not a rich country. The idea that Brazil's Vice President openly talks about developing nuclear weapons while millions of its citizens live in abject poverty .... words escape me.
But what is worse is Brazil's President Lulu defending the arms race that is now occurring in South America. Conventional arm's races have never brought stability .... in fact they create an atmosphere of impending war. President Lulu may believe that Brazil's and Venezuela's rush to buy expensive weapon systems will protect them and bring peace to the region ... I counter that it will do the opposite, and will in fact propel South America into a political/military environment that has been absent in modern Latin American history .... nation states arming themselves against other nation states.
